I Put The Stress In Seamstress...Wait... [Gideon]

Gideon HazelThe soft whirr of Paisley’s sewing machine was the only sound in an otherwise quiet room. The student preferred to bring his own, the newest model and one which was personally the easiest to work with. Currently he was working in the Home Ec room. Ah, yes, the room which held the only class Paisley excelled in. He was an expert at baking and sewing, whereas he was failing nearly all of his other studies. So why was he so stressed right now? Why was there a pile of discarded clothing he had made because he had deemed it unworthy of being kept?
The answer was simple. For once he wasn’t the only expert. There was someone else, another guy in his class, who was fairly skilled at the art of sewing. This had led Paisley’s train of thought off the tracks, one thing leading to another until the point where he was nearly shaking from anxiety. He had to be the best; he would never get accepted to further his studies at any of the top fashion academies if he was only second best. He could never have a career in the fashion industry if he wasn’t the best of the best.
So, this had led him to start stress sewing, and after he ran out of materials in his dorm Paisley had moved to the Home Ec room, paid for the materials he needed to take, and set to work once more. The humming droned on in the student’s ears, and he was so preoccupied with his thoughts that he didn’t notice his fingers moving to close, one of them getting clipped by the sharp needle. There was a pause as Paisley stared at the injury. He hadn’t made a mistake in years, especially not one which involved clipping his finger, and here it was, staring his right in the face, a small slice of red on pale skin.
Paisley stared, and the minor mistake snapped what fragile constitution he had left. Tears began to fall, and he pulled his knees up onto the stool to bury his face in them, crying silently and glad that at least there was nobody here to see him in this absolutely pathetic state. It was so unlike him to cry, he was always happy, perky, but this…his future…he just couldn’t take it right now.
[AN: Gideon'll probably know him by now. He's usually not very talkative, preferring to just work rather than socialize, but he's really friendly and approachable, he just doesn't actively seek out conversation or attention.]

Sighing heavily as he walked down the hallway and towards his classroom, Gideon ran a hand through his hair in frustration. He'd made it all the way to his dorm before realizing he'd forgotten a stack of forms on his desk. But at least the dorm wasn't too far, right? A little extra exercise was good for the soul. Right... Oh well, it was his own fault for forgetting. Blinking, Gideon paused outside his door as he heard the soft hum of a sewing machine. Then shaking his head some, the teacher chuckled as he realized that there had likely been a student sneak in to use the room after he left. He couldn't even bring himself to lock the door, at this point. Hmm, it was probably either Lucius or Paisley...
Upon opening the door, however, Gideon's amused smile dropped as instead of a student hard at work with the machine, he saw the boy curled up into himself, obviously upset. Frowning, the teacher approached the crumpled figured and placed a gentle hand on his back, leaning down to speak. "What's wrong, Paisley..?" He spoke softly, worried. He knew Paisley well from his classes, as an always happy and talented boy. He realized now that there was most likely a deal of stress involved, but... It was still jarring to see him in such a state.
Forgetting the already forgotten forms once more, Gideon pulled a chair out to sit beside the boy. If he wasn't willing to talk about it, that was fine, but the teacher knew the option was always appreciated. It was then that he noticed a smeared drop of blood on the table and machine. "...Nicked yourself, hmm? My fingers know that pain well." He spoke in a light-hearted tone in attempt to raise spirits. |

Paisley didn’t notice the man enter the room, fingers tangling and pulling at his soft hair as he gave a pathetic, whimpering cry into his legs. “I’m not good enough…I’ll never be good enough…” He whispered, trembling with— The second a hand touched his shoulder, Paisley gave a startled yelp, practically jumping out of his skin as he turned his attention to his professor. The student blinked a few times, eyes and face noticeably red from his crying and standing out just as much as the cut on his finger. The older man was asking him what was wrong and being extremely gentle, it took a moment to sink in.
With a hurried smile, Paisley wiped his eyes on a baggy sleeve and nodded his head, giving between a laugh and a cry as response. “M-mhm…y-yes I…” He looked to the now silent machine, a half sewn hem ready to be worked on at any second. Turning his attention back to Gideon, he nodded again, “Y-yes…h-how silly of me, getting all worked up over nothing.” His voice still quavered a bit, but overall he was regaining some semblance of composure. This was quite embarrassing to say the least.
The second thing his professor said made Paisley give a much more genuine, though softer laugh. “I…I doubt that. You’re amazing at sewing, I’ve never seen you make a mistake.” The man did his best to smooth out his now tangled hair, eventually giving up and tying it back, though the sides escaped to frame his face. His gaze traveled to the pile of outfits beside him, and he shifted nervously on the stool, “…I…hope you don’t mind, Professor Hazel. I…I ran out of material and, well, I need much more practice if I’ll ever be any good, so…” He was just talking now, still unable to escape from his mortification at being caught in an emotional state, “I did pay though! Ah, in your desk, in the envelope.”

Gideon sat quietly as Paisley tried his best to regain his composure and speak to him, giving the boy time to get himself together. Before he'd approached, the boy had mumbled something about not being good enough... Definitely a stress thing. As Paisley complimented him, Gideon smiled, shaking his head some. "Ohh, but that's where you're wrong. I make mistakes all the time, I just always pretend it was on purpose. You guys never suspect a thing." He joked, giving grin. "...Mistakes don't mean anything, Paisley. As you've just proven to yourself, even the most talented of people make them." He added.
"It's not silly to get worked up over it, though. I mean, there's not much helping it if it bothers you, right?" Gideon continued after another moment, then blinking and giving a confused look at the mention of money. "Ah, no, that's very unnecessary, Paisley. Please retrieve your money before you leave..." He directed, shaking his head some. "I don't mind at all if you use my classroom's materials. I mean, that's what they're here for. Please don't feel obligated to pay for them.. That aside, though. You're already very talented and you should know that... What's gotten you so down that you would doubt yourself?"

Paisley blinked and tilted his head, eyes growing a bot wider at the revelation, “Y-you mean those mistakes you make aren’t for demonstration? You…” There was a small moment where the student looked very solemn, and then he burst out into bright laugher, practically beaming at the man, “That’s brilliant! I had no idea!” Once he was told to retrieve the money, however, he frowned, “N-no, I can’t! I used so much; it wouldn’t be fair to just take it for free!” The man did his best to give a valiant protest, but part of him knew it would be in vain.
The reassurance had eased Paisley’s nerves quite a bit, making him much less insecure about having been caught crying. The question the professor posed made him frown more and look down to his lap, however, and he bunched his fists up in the fabric of his jeans, “…I…” The albino was hesitant to share the information, but he relented due to Gideon’s previous actions, “It sounds silly…I…I know it does but…” He bit his lip, “I’ve always been the best at sewing…it’s the only thing I’m really good at and I want a career in it but…”
Here it came, the thing that just sounded silly and petty and stupid to him, causing him to beat himself up over feeling insecure, “…I think…Lucius might be better. And if I’m not the best then how am I ever supposed to explore a career as a professional? Nobody wants someone who’s just second best. That’s why…that’s why I need to practice and get better, that’s what had me so…so worked up…” He cursed his pathetic pausing in the back of his mind, feeling even more stupid than usual at the moment.

Gideon Hazel Gideon grinned as Paisley pondered the new information and soon burst out into laughter. That was far preferable to seeing him upset. Once the student got over his laughter, however, he again tried to push the money. He at least seemed to realize that doing that was pointless, which was good. It was more than he could say for most teachers, but Gideon had plenty of money to keep his class stocked with materials. There was zero need for his students to pay for anything. He could never allow one to do so...
Once that was done with, however, Paisley seemed pretty calmed down, which was a relief. Gideon gave a soft smile and sat quietly for the moment, simply listening in case the boy decided to explain what upset him. It seemed that he did, as he soon began speaking. There were a lot of pauses, as Paisley seemed reluctant to admit what was on his mind. Eventually he managed to lay it all out, and Gideon frowned as he contemplated the new information. It certainly was a silly thing, but everyone had silly worries from time to time. It was part of being human.
"...I see. Well, Paisley, if you'd like my opinion... I don't believe anyone can be 'best' or 'second best' anything. At least, I don't believe anyone should consider themselves that. I know people will see life as a competition, but... To me, that seems like a good way to strip the fun from what you enjoy. You enjoy sewing, don't you? So does Lucius." Gideon paused at that. He assumed Lucius enjoyed it, at least... "Ahem. I'd hate to see you two as enemies simply because you both enjoy it. Instead, you could be helping each other and sharing ideas and techniques. You're both talented, and I can assure you that that's all anyone will look at. You don't need to worry about not being the absolute best. Don't you think?"

To say Paisley was anxious to see how the man would react was an understatement. He was terrified that he would be reprimanded for being overdramatic or for feeling negatively toward another student or for just downright being stupid about this, but the man was surprisingly…helpful. Well, not that surprisingly, after all Professor Hazel was definitely the most amiable professor he had encountered this year, so it made sense that he would be able to provide good advice for the situation. He did wince a bit at the words, shifting in his stool to get into a more comfortable position.
“But…I won’t get to be the best if I’m just doing it for fun. And I do need to be the best to further my craft at one of the elite industries…and…” Paisley turned red from embarrassment, feeling a little but pitiful and foolish about the next part, “…Lucius…kinda scares me. I mean he…they seem like they would get annoyed with my peppy attitude really fast and I’ve had a lot of that already.” The albino puffed his cheeks out for a moment before blowing a loose strand of hair out of his face.
“I’m sorry. I know you like them and I’m not saying I dislike Lucius I just don’t really see us being friends or partners in craft. Besides, their focus is on a much different area of fashion than mine.” The student chewed his lip before spinning the stool to face Gideon, “What about you? I mean, what we’re learning in class I already know, but there has to be other stuff you haven’t taught that I don’t, maybe you could help me get better?” He asked earnestly, eyes already lighting up at the thought.
