Personality & Appearance
Personality: Merlin can do nothing by halves. Apathy is simply not in his nature. He doesn’t really understand how a person can live without seeing each day as an adventure. When he starts to get down or bored he simply finds something to do. Any excuse is a good excuse. He is passionately involved in his hobbies and enthusiastically believes that all people are capable of being whatever they care to be. Anger, love, hate, sorrow, ecstasy- they are all closely linked in his chaotic soul.
He is at heart a modern day gypsy. He has a hard time settling down, be it in love or in life- probably one of the major reasons he has never had a serious relationship. That’s just the one thing he can’t commit to. Merlin rebels against authority, against anyone trying to tell him what to do. Respect is something you earn against him, and he expects to have to earn it.
Honesty is perhaps the thing he holds most dear besides his freedom. Don’t try to play him, don’t try to lie to him. He doesn’t have time for liars. He takes people’s word at face value and expects them to do the same to him.
Appearance: Tall and lean, Merlin stands just over 6 feet tall. His shoulders are relatively broad but his body is lanky. Wiry muscles move under his skin with a strength that’s not entirely obvious and he has some wicked flexibility. His skin is frequently tanned or even a bit sunburned from his time outdoors. His lips are thin and the angularity of his face is only accented by his undercut, raven-wing black hair. Normally his hair is slicked back but he tousles it with his hands too often for it to stay neat.
Scars mark his skin in pale touches. Most are easily hidden under the rag-tag, many times mended clothing he wears. The most obvious that isn’t easily covered is a thin line on his lower lip, a pale strip cutting through the rosy flesh. While the souvenirs of many piercings litter his face and ears he only has one that he still keeps, a steel barbell through his right eyebrow.

History
Merlin struggled as an only child with an overbearing mother and an overworked father. While quite bright, he barely scraped by academically. His teachers often chided him for daydreaming. Once, he tried to explain that he wasn’t daydreaming, he was planning. That didn’t go over so well. By highschool he was in full-fledged rebellion. He got his GED without telling his parents and quite school to work when he was sixteen. They kicked him out and he hardly looked back.
Shortly after he turned 18, Merlin took a stint in the Peace Corps. He ended up spending time in Africa. He wrote about some travels and managed to scrape together a modest income that allowed him to go straight from Africa into Europe. He did some travel photography and a lot of writing to fund his stay and eventually began attending universities. While his studies covered a broad range of subjects, it was in Spain where he settled on history and eventually obtained a degree. Besides that, he studied architecture in Italy, philosophy in Britain, chemistry in Germany- all along the way picking up the languages he needed to get by.
To pay for the expense of his travels, Merlin wasn’t completely innocent of the darker sides of the world. Far from it, in truth. He reveled in the freedom of the underworld, where anything was for sale or trade. He bartered his skills, his knowledge, or even his body for whatever he happened to need at the time. He dabbled in drugs for a few years but decided it wasn’t for him.
Eventually he came back to the US, though not until he turned 30. His vagabond lifestyle wasn’t as well suited for America as it had been for Europe so he took off for South America for a few years. He worked on a ranch in Argentina, taught English in Uruguay, and harvested grapes for a season at a vineyard in Chile. As he was considering what to do next, he explored the idea of teaching in the US- most places wouldn’t have him but he suspected that an unusual school might be interested in his broad skill set. So he applied to Amesti and with no back up plan began to make his travel arrangements. He only just arrived in time for the fall semester.
